Global Business Company 1

The Mauritius international financial services centre offers two types of companies to international clients. Namely the Category One Global Business License (GBC1) Company and the Category Two Global Business License (GBC2) Company. The formation and on-going maintenance of both companies are time and cost efficient and rest on a very flexible and modern company and financial services legislations.

A GBC1 company is tax resident in Mauritius and is eligible to benefit from the network of Double Taxation Agreements (DTAs) that Mauritius has entered into with other countries. Entities engaged in non-banking financial services, fund management or insurance can also apply for a GBC1. GBC2 are tax exempt entities and hence are mainly used for international business transactions, consultancy services or for private investment holdings. However, they do not benefit from DTAs.

Both types of entities are given the highest degree of confidentiality under Mauritius law. No information regarding their shareholding, their accounts or their activities are publicly accessible.

Companies that are registered in Mauritius can hold either a category one or category two global business licence, the distinction being companies conducting business in Mauritius require category one licences, and those conducting business outside Mauritius category two licences.

This distinction is important as the use of a category one licenced company (GBC1) allows the company to take advantage of Mauritius’ growing network of tax treaties, a critical feature for many companies, funds, and collective investment schemes incorporated in Mauritius.

Advantages of a GBC 1 include:

  • Tax planning. A GBC 1 company may benefit from the double taxation treaties to which Mauritius is a party if it comes within the definition of a resident under the taxation laws
